Wheelchair and Scooter Carriers and Racks

This section of our guide is focused on manual wheelchair and scooter racks, and electric wheelchair and scooter platform lifts that mount into the rear towing hitch on your vehicle. The first thing to understand is that all vehicles are rated by the manufacturer for hitch size. The size of the hitch opening and depth determine the weight capacity. Keep in mind that the weight capacity includes the combined weight of the lift and the weight of the mobility device you are going to load. Here are the specifications;

  • Class I – 1 ¼” x 1 ¼” opening with a shallower depth than a class II, resulting in a lower weight capacity of 200 pounds.
  • Class II – 1 ¼” x 1 ¼” opening with full depth, resulting in a capacity of 300 pounds.
  • Class III – 2” x 2” opening with full depth, resulting in a capacity of 500 pounds.

You will encounter adapters for sale that change the opening of a hitch. It is important to note that using an adapter to reduce the size of the opening should not a problem since the weight of the load will be less when keeping within the weight limit.
